Lexington Women's Bible Study

Walking in the Light: Developing the Spiritual Art of Discernment

Women's Bible Study 2025 - 2026

Women's Bible Study begins on September 23rd! Registration is open through May.

Would you like to be a part of a small group of women who love, support, encourage, and pray for one another, and who gather each week to read the Scriptures together? If so, the Lexington Women’s Bible Study is the place for you! No previous experience with studying the Bible or belonging to a small group required—if you’re interested, we’d love to have you join us! Registration link is below the study description.

This year's study will be on:

Walking in the Light: Developing the Spiritual Art of Discernment

Throughout the Scriptures, God uses the metaphor of light to describe what it means to live in partnership with the Lord, to seek and obey God’s will, to be guided by the Lord in all that we do—in other words, to live lives of discernment. Just a few examples:

  • The prophet Isaiah invites us: “‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.’… Come, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the LORD” (Isaiah 2:3-4).
  • The psalmist proclaims: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105).
  • Jesus himself said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).
  • The apostle Paul writes: “Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:8-10, ESV).

Grounded in the many passages in Scripture that speak about light and darkness, our study this year will help us to develop the spiritual art of discernment.

Discernment is not just a spiritual gift given to some, or an optional path believers may choose to pursue; rather, discernment is an essential component of every believer’s walk with God, and a necessary companion to the spiritual discipline of reading Scripture. It is only through discernment that we can truly understand God’s Word and correctly apply it to our lives and to our increasingly complex world. And therefore, it is only through cultivating a practice of discernment that we can know and follow God’s will for our lives. In other words, discernment is what enables us to think biblically about our lives, our church, and our world.

By immersing ourselves in God’s Word, with particular focus on passages that deal with light and darkness, wisdom and folly, discernment and decision making and discovering God’s will, and by engaging in spiritual practices that help us cultivate discerning hearts, we will explore together what discernment means, why it matters, and how we can practice it, both as individuals and as a church.

There are several different ways to participate:

  • We have both a morning option (9:30am) and an evening option (7:00pm).
  • Both the morning and evening sessions have in-person groups and Zoom groups.
  • There is also the option to choose a Korean-language group (morning and evening) or a Mandarin-language group (morning only).

Registration is $20 for the full year and includes the cost of the book. If you have any questions about registration or need financial assistance, reach out to Grace Choi (Women's Group Coordinator).

There is a Women's Group that meets on Wednesday mornings at Wilmington or Watertown, using the same teaching material. The Wilmington group meets at 9:30am and the Watertown group meets at 10:30am. For inquiries about the Wilmington group, contact Kristina Frizzell; for the Watertown group, reach out to Christine Mueller or Susan Park.

Women's Lectio Divina

Whether you have been a part of women’s Bible study in the past or not, you are warmly invited to join us for Women’s Lectio Divina at the Grace Chapel Cafe for five Tuesdays in July and four Tuesdays in August at 9:30-10:30am or 6:30-7:30pm. You can join us for any or all sessions, depending on your schedule. Each week, we will open the Bible App, find the verse of the day, and then find the chapter that the verse comes from. After opening in prayer, we will explore the text together using the following pattern:

  • Read the passage out loud once. After a moment of silent reflection, we will go around and share in response to the following question: “What word or phrase is God highlighting in this passage for me right now?”—sharing without observation or comments, just naming the word or phrase that God is drawing our attention to.
  • Then we will read the passage out loud a second time. After another moment of silent reflection, we will go around again and share in response to the following question: “What is the Lord saying to me right now through this passage/word/phrase?”
  • We will read the passage one final time, have one final moment of silent reflection, and then share with one another: “What might God be inviting me to through this passage right now?”
  • Our time together will end with a conversation about our personal responses to the text, how the text relates to our life, what we might need to pray about in relation to the text, and how we sense God calling us to respond.
