Messiah Sings | Lexington

Friday, 12/16/22 at 8:00pm

About the Event

Lexington

Masterworks Chorale presents Messiah Sings.  Even if you are unfamiliar with this event this is a great opportunity to meet local vocalists and performers that will perform Handle's Messiah together.  Or, if you have your own sheet music, bring it and join in!

Each section seats a different choral voice part (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and bass) and sings their part of the 50 separate pieces of Messiah.  More info about Masterworks Chorale Messiah Sings

"Standing in the middle of a big crowd belting out the Hallelujah chorus as the trumpets blare and the drums throb will make your hair stand on end, even if you're not a classical music fan, according to CBC Calgary's resident classical music expert, Catherine McClelland. Messiah is one of Handel's most famous works and tells the story of Jesus Christ from birth, to death, to resurrection. Like an opera, it tells a large-scale story but does so without sets or costumes. The oratorio first premiered in Dublin in 1742 and received a London premiere nearly a year later. The work became popular in the United Kingdom's strong choral scene in the 1800s. They would put on these huge performances like 500 singers or 2,000 singers, and 500 people in the orchestra. And that was sort of transported to North America, only they had the idea in the 1960s to call it a sing-in Messiah, McClelland said. So there were soloists and it was an orchestra, but the audience was invited to sing the choruses." (excerpt from CBC News)
