“So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, ‘Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?’” (1 Kings 17:10)

In a nation that was required by law to care for its prophets it is ironic that God turned to ravens and a widow to care for Elijah. God has help where we least expect it. He provides for us in ways that go beyond our narrow definitions of expectations. We may find His providence in some strange places.

When Elijah arrived in Zarephath, the scene was bleak. A widow, gathering a few sticks for what she believed would be her final meal, stood as a picture of quiet despair. Yet, it was into this very moment of emptiness that God sent His prophet,  not just to receive provision, but to reveal His power.

Elijah’s simple request, “Bring me a little water… and a piece of bread”  tested the widow’s faith. To give when you have nothing feels impossible. But God often invites us to trust Him with the little we have before He shows us what He can do with it.

When the widow obeyed, she experienced a miracle that defied logic. Her jar of flour and jug of oil never ran dry. Each day brought just enough  a quiet, daily reminder that the God who called her to trust was the same God who sustained her life.

Our faith grows not in abundance, but in dependence. When we surrender what little we hold, we make room for God’s unlimited provision. Reflect  today on these 2 questions

  • What “little” do I have today that I can thank God for?
  • How might gratitude deepen my trust when resources feel small?

Prayer Prompt: Lord, thank You for being faithful even when my hands feel empty. Teach me to trust You like the widow of Zarephath,  to obey with a grateful heart and to see Your hand in every small provision. May thankfulness rise within me each day as a reminder that You are my true and constant supply. Amen.
