Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:21)

Probably almost all of us have times when we feel like we don’t know what to do next, what direction we should go in, how we should move forward. Whatever the situation is that has us feeling stuck—whether it’s financial hardship, a new diagnosis, a family member going through a difficult season, or simply a challenging problem at work—this feeling of unknowing can be deeply disconcerting, especially for people used to being decisive and taking action. We want to do the right thing, we want to say the right thing, we want to make the choice that will make things better—but sometimes it feels just about impossible to know what that is. At times like those, we may long to hear God’s voice speaking directly to us, telling us, “This is the way; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21).

Following Jesus does not guarantee that we will always know what to do in difficult situations—but it does mean we can always come to Jesus and seek his guidance. We can bring our troubling situations into the light of his presence; we can hold all the options before him and ask for his wisdom and sit patiently with him, listening for his voice. Nor does following Jesus guarantee that we will always hear clear answers to our prayers for guidance. But when we partner with Jesus in choosing which way to go, we can have peace about our decisions, knowing that we have done our best to seek his will and his way; that he will be with us, regardless of the outcome; and that in spending time with Christ, we are growing closer to the one who is himself the Way, and the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6).

Prayer Prompt: Lord Jesus, I believe that you are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Whenever I have a difficult choice to make, a challenging conversation ahead of me, or a complex situation to navigate, help me to bring it all to you and rely on your wisdom. Help me to grow closer to you as I walk in your way and trust that you are with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
