"For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God." Romans 15:4-7

Hope. Real, tangible hope. Not just wishful thinking or positive thoughts, but a secure, sure hope that is unshakable. How do we find such a hope? Where can we get that kind of hope? In the Word of God, Scripture, which shows us the endurance of those who have gone before and gives us encouragement to hold on to the hope God pours into our hearts. Isn’t it amazing to think about how the God of all creation who holds all things together and is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, and everlasting, is also described as the God who gives encouragement? When we are faced with unexpected (or expected) sorrows and troubles and fears and worries, let us remember to turn first to the One who has promised encouragement and endurance to those who ask Him, and let us with teachable hearts look into His Word for comfort and guidance, wisdom and truth. What riches God has provided for us in His Word and in His presence! Let us plumb the depths of His goodness and grace as we search the Scriptures to learn more and more about who He is. The result will be hope: for when we gaze intently upon Jesus, we can’t help but be filled with the hope with which the Gospel overflows.

Prayer Prompt: Gracious Father, You are called the “God of Hope” in Romans 15:13. As Paul prayed for the church in Rome, we pray for our church community that You would fill us with all joy and peace as we trust in You, so that we may overflow with hope by the power of your Holy Spirit...
