“We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.” (1 Thessalonians 2:8 NIV)
We often think that those involved in international missions are well-schooled in the Bible, excel in language learning, are gifted in preaching and so much more than me, an “average” Christian. But in fact probably one of the most important attributes needed for sharing the truth of the gospel involves more than words, it involves living in a way that allows others to look deeply into our lives and see who we are as the Lord continues to shape us more and more like Christ. Investing ourselves in others through genuine relationships along with sharing the gospel provides a credibility to the message of the gospel that will attract others to the Father.
This is not just a way to live for those who go to the nations with the gospel but it is a way for each of us to live right where we are. Our neighbors, co-workers, extended families, any non-believer in our sphere of influence will be more open to hearing the truth of the gospel from someone living as Jesus did - sharing His life, allowing others to see the Father’s deep love for us. Being truly vulnerable as we walk side by side with others allow for their hearts to not only hear the gospel but to see it played out in real life.
Take a moment, look at where you are now and identify a way or two you can share your life and the gospel with those who need to hear. Perhaps become a host friend for an international student, join an exercise class, take a community class, volunteer at your local school to help students with reading or math, join a local library book club -- there are endless opportunities to connect, build relationships and open your life to others. And who knows, maybe the Father might even show you a way to use your giftings in another country where people are hungry for the gospel-- teaching, helping to build needed infrastructure, serving orphans and the poor, providing medical services and much more.
Prayer Prompt: Father, give us the courage to be vulnerable and to share our life with someone that needs to know who You are, who needs to hear the truth of the gospel, who needs to experience tangible demonstrations of God’s love. Help us to look beyond what is comfortable and to be willing to open our eyes to see where you are working and to whole heartly join in your kingdom work - no matter where that takes us.
