“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14–16
Recently, my daughter shared the story of her friend whose sister has special needs. She explained that their family rarely takes vacations together—either out of guilt for leaving her sister behind, or because someone must stay home to care for her. In this instance, the mother stayed behind while the father and daughter went away.
My daughter has also been inspired to volunteer with a project in Asia that advocates for children and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The project creates community-based tools and resources to foster acceptance and inclusion. Her friend’s sister is one of the people who inspired her to do this.
As we talked, my daughter reflected on the quiet sacrifices this family makes, and we thought about how her friend’s parents now wrestle with the question of who will care for their daughter when they are gone. Our conversation also reminded me of when I had to ensure my own parents were cared for in their old age.
Through these stories, I was reminded that each season of life brings unique challenges. Yet in every circumstance, Christ sustains us and calls us to shine His love in practical ways. When we care for those who are vulnerable, we reflect His light to the world.
Prayer Prompt: Dear Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank You for Your love for all Your children. We lift up those who are sick, elderly, or living with special needs. Sustain them with Your strength, and surround them with caregivers who shine Your love through their compassion. May they feel Your presence and know that You carry them each day. Amen.
