“for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” (I Peter 1:16)
Charles Spurgeon taught that “Prayer is the mark of godliness even its infancy.”
Perhaps you do not see yourself as a portrait of godliness. There’s probably some healthy self-awareness and humility in there. But pursuing holiness in order that we might grow to become more like Jesus is a healthy spiritual practice (and is a command of Scripture). Whether you are young in the faith, well-experienced or like countless others, somewhere along the complicated journey - one of the essential marks of godliness is the growing practice of prayer.
Spurgeon was a passionate preacher and did not mince his words. In one of his writings he said that if God heard the prayers of a great sinner like King David, then he’ll hear mine! That’s one of the keys in experiencing a transformed life - you must embrace both your weaknesses and your passion for godliness - in order that Jesus will give you the grace to transform you. May we pray like that.
Prayer Prompt: “Lord, I confess my sin and brokenness to you. Like the many faithful followers before me, my heart chases after yours. May you give me the grace to grow in holiness, to be set apart for you in these ways …”
