“Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them." (Deuteronomy 4:9)

We humans are a forgetful bunch. We know this about ourselves: we forget names, we forget dates, we forget where we put things. We forget to pack our phone charger when we leave on vacation; we forget to attach the attachment to the e-mail; we forget to do things we promised others we would do. Of course, our Creator knows this about us, too. And throughout the Bible, God seems to be concerned that somehow, we would forget about him, and all that he has done for us. So God reminds us: Do not forget. “Do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart.” “Do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt.” (Deut. 4:9, 6:12)

Take a few minutes today, and intentionally remember “the things your eyes have seen”: the ways God has helped you navigate and survive difficult seasons in your life; the beautiful places God has allowed you to visit and the amazing people God has allowed you to know; the change and growth you have seen in your own life as God has developed the fruit of his Spirit in you. Give thanks to God, the giver of all these good gifts. Let him know that you remember him.

But God isn’t only concerned that we will forget him; he is also concerned that we will forget his people. So God reminds us: Do not forget. “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers.” “Do not forget to do good and to share with others.” (Hebrews 13:2, 16). Ask God to show you today who needs hospitality, care, or comfort. One of the best ways we can show God that we remember his goodness to us is by displaying his goodness to others.

Prayer Prompt: Lord, thank you for your goodness and faithfulness to me personally. Thank you for being close by my side in difficult seasons, and for all the gifts and blessings you have given me. Show me concretely, Lord, who you want me to bless today with your goodness. Help me to honor you by showing hospitality to strangers and by sharing my time, my talent, and my treasure with brothers and sisters in need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
