What We Are Studying
MARCHING ORDERS: Peter, Paul, and the Early Church
The story of Jesus Christ – His birth, His life, His death, and His resurrection – is a remarkable story. His very name – Jesus – means “God with us.” God among us, acting in ways that heal, help, and save us. Often, when we read these kinds of amazing stories we are so awestruck that we just stand off to the side and watch. So many of us are admirers of Jesus, “fans” of Jesus, and we even try to be like Jesus.
Luke’s task is to challenge us to avoid this spectator mentality. As we study Acts, we will see that Luke wants us to pick up our own Marching Orders and be moved, as the apostles were, to make a difference for God in our world today. Why? Because the story of Jesus doesn’t end with Jesus. It continues in the lives of those who believe in Him. Luke makes it clear that these early Christians were not just admirers of Jesus. They were in on the action of God, allowing God to work in them, to live in them. And their Marching Orders are our marching orders!
Come to Joy Bible Study this year. Join us as we climb into the stories of Acts – put yourself in the place of the apostles – feel with them as they are filled with the Holy Spirit – then celebrate with them as they see thousands respond to the Good News of Jesus Christ. Catch their commitment as they give all they have – time, talent, and treasure – to Jesus. Marvel at the Spirit-led boldness of these early believers, then pick up your own marching orders as a 21st century woman of God.
