Mateus de Campos

Dr. Mateus de Campos serves as senior pastor at Grace Chapel, beginning his role in September 2026.

Prior to leading Grace Chapel, Pastor Mateus taught at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary as the George F. Bennett Associate Professor of New Testament. He is originally from Brazil and has resided in multiple countries with his family while serving in a variety of pastoral and academic roles throughout his career. 

Pastor Mateus married his wife, Renata, 27 years ago, and they went straight into ministry together as youth pastors. Mateus was later a pastor for 10 years at the Church of the Nazarene in Americana, Brazil, where he preached, taught, and developed ministries during a season of significant church growth. He then attended Regent College in Vancouver to earn a Master of Arts in Theological Studies, and he went on to earn a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies from the University of Cambridge. He and Renata currently reside in Middleton, MA, with their children, Matt and Zoe.

In addition to learning and ministering across different cultures, Pastor Mateus brings intergenerational experience. As a youth pastor, Pastor Mateus led a group of 500 students from middle school through college. He is often invited to speak to college students at campus ministry retreats and events throughout the Boston area.

Grace Chapel nominated Pastor Mateus after an extensive senior pastor search process over the past year. His personal relatability and life experiences, along with his wide-ranging expertise, contributed to him earning the nomination. He approaches his role at Grace Chapel with a humble posture of service.

“I would say that leadership in the context of the Christian life is servanthood,” Pastor Mateus said. “So, the senior pastor is the senior servant.”
