Leaders Link November 2018
Dear Leader Friends,
Thought I would interrupt the flood of emails announcing Black Friday Sales to express our gratitude for you and to say a few things.
As we head into Thanksgiving, I wanted to remind you of how precious and needed you are in the life of our church. Thank you for all the ways you serve in this ministry and beyond to help people belong to Christ and in community. Indeed, it’s a challenging time on many fronts, and the holidays often intensity certain feelings. So may the Lord give you strength in your own life, and may the Lord work through you to bless those in need of care around you.
GROUP LIFE TRAINING BRUNCH AT YOUR CAMPUS
Please reserve January 26 8:30-11:30am for our Group Life Training Brunch. Gathering together and growing as leaders is truly essential and it’s one of our few touchpoints with one another, so we hope you will attend and bring members of your core team with you. (The more people you include in these conversations, the easier it is to share the vision with your group.)
Why do some groups flourish, why do some groups struggle, and why do some hit a ceiling and feel stuck? We’re cooking the content now and want to equip you as leaders to understand your own unique group's chemistry and how to lead out of your specific context. More to come, but we ask that you block the date on your calendar.
COLLECTING STORIES OF BELONGING
Pastor Bryan and the Teaching Team are looking for stories of people belonging. They might be used as sermon ministry moments, video interviews, or in other examples. They can be told by you or by those who experienced the goodness of it. They can be simple and pure, they can be creative and intriguing, they can be a little messy, or a combination of it all. We just ask for them to be authentic and true (like the best stories of belonging are). So maybe the Lord brought someone unexpected into your group and they finally found what they were looking for. Or maybe a long-term member shared out of their truth and vulnerability for the first time and as a result is now experiencing Christian community like never before. May you consider sharing what the Lord is doing in our midst for the benefit of others and to continue to bring God glory. Please email any potential thoughts to me, and I’ll take them no matter how rough they are.
LEADER-CURATED RESOURCE LIBRARY
During the Q&A of the Campus Leader Vision Gathering in Lexington, someone suggested creating a resource library and we think it’s a great idea. And recently, a different leader shared a study their group loved and found beneficial. It’s called Whisper by Mark Batterson and focuses on our alertness and willingness to be led by the Holy Spirit and is available on Right Now Media. We have a couple thoughts in the air but the first two steps are to collect your favorite suggestions, email them to me, and we’ll post them at www.grace.org/lcleaders as the list populates. If you don’t see it, we didn’t receive any :)
Here’s what we’re looking for:
- Name of study and a link to where you found it.
- A brief summary, its duration, and 2 or 3 pros and cons, including what types of groups you think it would be ideal for. Think of it as a helpful review on Amazon.
POSSIBLE STUDIES AND RESOURCES
In addition to what you will suggest, I’ve been previewing the following. If you end up using them, please let me know how they went.
New and popular on RightNow Media:
Love Like That by Les Parrott
"Let’s be honest. How many times have you fallen short at being a good friend, a wise parent, or a self-giving spouse because you didn't love—truly love—at the highest level? It’s tough. We’re bound to fail. The bar is so high, especially if you aspire to love like Jesus. But it’s not impossible.
"As followers of Jesus, we were meant to radically love those around us and give the world a glimpse of what God is like. In this 6-part Bible study series, Dr. Les Parrott examines Jesus’s life and character traits to give practical definition to what it means to love like Jesus. The Holy Spirit invites us to trade detachment, exclusivity, judgment, fear, and self-concern for mindfulness, approachability, grace, boldness, and self-giving. He empowers us to love like Jesus, and frees us to experience genuine joy.”
The Dream of You by Jo Saxton
Young Adult / Fire groups may be interested in this new study with Jo Saxton.
"Is this the life you were meant to live?
"Let’s be honest, the life you lead isn’t what you’ve always dreamt. And maybe the person you’ve become isn’t who you’ve always imagined. Sure, you can clean it up. You can work longer, love harder, and eat better. You can scrub the surface of your life until it gleams and still never address the fact that somehow you lost sight of who you really are and what you’re living for.
"In this powerful 6-session Bible study based on her book, author and speaker Jo Saxton examines biblical figures and shares her personal story as she invites you to turn to the One who knows you intimately and loves you deeply. Discover how to exchange an identity built on lies, guilt, and brokenness for your true child-of-God self.”
Waiting Here For You by Louie Giglio
Advent begins next week and if you are looking for a simple devotion that prompts you to think and pray, I invite you to join me in going through Waiting Here For You by Louie Giglio. The Kindle version is currently on sale for $1.99 (unsure of how long the sale will continue). Each day is less than a page of reading which includes a brief reflection on waiting for God, a meditation in the form of a song lyric, hymn, or poem, and a brief prayer to get you started. Here’s the Amazon description:
"Waiting Here for You helps us anticipate rather than dread the busy season of Advent and Christmas.
"Life is full of waiting – we can’t escape it. We find ourselves in the middle of it every day – waiting on a prognosis to be given…a verdict to be reached…a promotion to be announced. And in these seasons of waiting that anxiety, desperation and hopelessness creep in.
"Waiting Here For You takes us through the advent – the season of waiting. In it we see the story of the coming of Jesus...."
As always, please let us know if we can help you and know that I and our leadership team are always up for a cup of coffee or a chat over the phone.
