Prayer of Examen

The Prayer of Examen, or the Daily Examen, is an ancient Christian habit of reflective prayer.

The persistent habit of the Examen allows us to hear God the Father’s voice, recognize Jesus’ presence in our daily life, and discern the Holy Spirit’s direction for us.

Practicing the Daily Examen

  • First outlined by Ignatius Loyola in the 16th century, the Examen is still practiced by Christ-followers today.
  • Choose a time each day to practice this simple and short prayer.
  • Commit to it for the next five weeks, giving yourself grace if you forget, and see what God does in your life and through you in the lives of others.

Prayer of Examen: Week 5 - Gratitude

Let’s start with a few deep centering breaths, reminding ourselves that we are in God’s presence.

  • First, Relish the good moments.

    • Think back over the past 24 hours with gratitude for the moments you experienced God's goodness and love.

  • Next, Request God’s help.

    • Give the Holy Spirit permission to search your heart for all things that might be hindering your ability to give thanks to God.

  • Then Review your day.

    • Reflect on the past 24 hours, and try to name the hardships you are currently facing, with distresses that have kept you from experiencing a grateful heart.

  • Fourth, Repent of any failures.

    • Repent of the times you have neglected to remind yourself of God's faithfulness and instead kept your mind and heart on other things.

  • Finally, Resolve to live tomorrow well.

    • Receive the Lord's forgiveness and the freedom to try again. Resolve to practice a heart of gratitude this week and to see the ways God continually fights for and provides for you each day.

Take a few deep, centering breathes and thank God for this time together.
