About Doug
As Doug begins his twelfth year on our Staff, he serves currently as the Pastor for Adult Discipleship. Doug and the Adult Discipleship Ministry Team exists to develop “life-long disciples of Jesus Christ,” women and men who are continuously undergoing spiritual formation and learning to translate their faith into joyful, effective, daily living. Helping “conceptualize” that challenge and then converting those concepts into real, biblically-based, life-changing learning experiences is what Doug delights to do. You will find him regularly teaching a variety of adult courses on topics ranging from Jesus Christ and His Lordship to studies of specific books of the Bible.
Doug and his wife, Mary, moved to the Boston area in 1978, and immediately became participants and members of Grace Chapel. At that time, Doug was doing college ministry with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He served with IVCF for 21 years, working with students at Harvard, then overseeing the ministry in Boston and New England, and eventually acting as part of the national campus ministry steering team. In a sense, Doug still does “student ministry,” as disciples are learners who sit at Jesus’ feet. And the students are no longer bounded by age limits or tethered to a campus.
Admittedly, Doug is glad that his formal years as a student are now over. As an undergraduate, he was a history major at Princeton, where his faith deepened and became more real to him, partially due to a terrific Christian campus fellowship. He then went directly to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary for a Master of Divinity degree. A decade later, he completed Gordon-Conwell’s Doctorate of Ministry program.
Doug and Mary and their four children live in Bedford, a simple 6 mile bike ride from Grace Chapel. Doug enjoys people, tennis (as the knees permit), astronomy, and wood working. Mary loves music and gardening and investing in friends and family. Peter loves school and sports at the ripe age of 11. Older son John coaches soccer and teaches at the Stony Brook School on Long Island. Laura is finishing up her nursing degree at St. Olaf near Minneapolis. Katie is now a college student at Gordon College, but journeys back to Grace Chapel each week to help staff the Middle School youth ministry.
